SLICKPOO MISSION CEMETERY

By Byron Bovey

Slickpoo Mission Cemetery is located on the very edge of western Lewis  County.  The legal description of it is "652.30 feet South, 128.90 feet East of NE corner of Lot 18, Section 4, township 34, North Range three, WBM, Section 4,  Township 34 East 270.0 feet, thence South 17 degrees, 47 West a distance of 125 feet, thence north 72 degrees 13 West a distance of 125 feet, Lot 18, Section  4, township 34, North Range three WBM".

The cemetery is located on land originally owned by the Slickpoo Mission  and was eventually all sold by the Pioneer Educational Society of Spokane, Washington, to Laurence Hasenoehrl, except for the cemetery property.

No plat exists for this cemetery and there are, no doubt, many burials here that are not known about at this time.  The priest records on the burials were acquired in 1994 and most of the dates came from those records.

As of 1998, this cemetery is in terrible shape.  Many stones have been knocked over apparently by cows that were allowed to wander through the cemetery.  Also the brush is very thick in places, and it is very possible some stones were missed when this cemetery was read for inclusion in this material.  A new fence was erected around the cemetery a few years ago that will take care of the cow problem.  The knocked over stones and the brush will require hours of work if this cemetery is ever to be restored.
